Supporting Bilingualism in Vulnerable Populations

Although bilingualism is generally appraised and supported by society, many more doubts arise when it comes to children suffering from neurodevelopmental disorders. The concern that the exposure two languages might deteriorate linguistic development of children, together with advice simplify environment adopt a monolingual approach, leads families abandon their home language sacrifice bilingualism. Scientific research, however, has shown this fear ungrounded developmental disorders can become successful bilingual speakers, if they are provided appropriate exposure. aim paper providing state-of-the-art literature on topic, reviewing studies conducted interaction between disorders, focusing in particular disorder (DLD), dyslexia autism spectrum disorder. We discuss issues related early identification DLD among bilinguals we report results showing does not exacerbate difficulties but contrary be beneficial for them, at cognitive, socio-cultural level. Finally, provide some recommendations parents, educators practitioners, importance supporting family all its components, including literacy, complete harmonic growth.
